* I’m working on an update on this post to provide more detailed information. If you’re looking to gauge your chances of applying for a course normally, I recommend reading this: So you have just gotten your A level results and trying this tool: University Admission Score Calculator.

If you’re reading this now, you probably have already been rejected by one of the local universities. Don’t worry though! There are still many things that you can do to increase your chances during the appeal stage (or even if you’ve already been rejected after appealing).

Background

I’m a male “A” Level student (from one of the lowest ranked JC) who was rejected by all 3 local universities for 3 years (That’s about (3 (normal applications) + 3 (appeals each year) ) x 3 years = 18 times!) before I finally decided to do things out of the norm and try my luck.

My A-Level grades were:
H2 Phy: C
H2 Math: B
H2 Econs: B

H1 GP: E
H1: Chem: S
PW: C

CCA: Just some club thing. No competitions or activities. Almost non-existant.

As you can notice, I failed my H1 chemistry which I was told was a huge deal breaker because it was vital to the computation of your UAS (University Admission Score).

I did retake my chemistry in my second year of service which was 2 years after I took my “A” levels and do well. Only managed to get a D which wasn’t as bad as finding out that you can only join your certificate if the subject is taken within a year of the previous one so in the end it was of no use to me. Just take note of this if reconsidering retaking any of your modules.

EDIT: Please note that by right only the H1 content-based subject, H1 Project Work (PW) and H1 Mother-Tongue Language (MTL) subject can be of a different sitting. Computation of your UAS will take into account grades for GP/KI and 3 H2 subjects attained at 1 sitting of the A-level examination.

How to appeal

1. Do your research!

The most important thing to do before appealing is to do your research! This involves reading local forums such as Brightsparks or the Hardwarezone Degree Forums (More Active) so that you can gauge the competition each course faces, subject requirements,  rough UAS required to gain admittance and how many are likely to drop them for another course. You can also buy research papers online cheap to get a good idea what sort of work you are expected to do once you are there.

2. Appeal Normally

After you have done sufficient research and  chosen a course that you wish to appeal, appeal through the school’s portals normally. Most of them require that you write essays and some like NTU just require you to write a short paragraph. For my NTU appeal, all I wrote was:

I would really like to be a part of NTU and as a creative, hardworking and dedicated student; I feel that I would be an asset to NTU. I would be glad to participate in an interview to better present myself and discuss how my talents can be of value.

Remember that they already have your grades so don’t waste your precious characters putting them in. I had no special talents but if you do, it would be wise to add it in. For universities that require essays, you can write personal statements to show your passion. I have included my own for the other universities in the attached zip file below. If you’re appealing to other courses and need more samples, click here.

3. Appeal with help from your Member of Parliament

Your constituency most likely has meet the people sessions fortnightly. Take this opportunity to meet with them and get them to assist you in writing an additional appeal to all four schools. Remember to bring everything you deem will be useful in writing your appeals such as your academic transcripts, letters of recommendation (any have) and personal statements (see attached zip file) if you’ve already written one.

Remember to come prepared. Have a clear goal of the courses you would like to appeal and how you would like to go about doing it for each of them. If you can draft the letters yourself, it’s better.

4. Individual letters of appeal

This may seem rather extreme but it’s something I feel may have helped me (and the rest who have tried it) the most. This step involves tediously searching through the school’s contact directory for head of departments, deans etc. who are directly linked to your course in some way and mailing them letters of appeal with your personal statement attached (see attached zip file).

Although some may consider just e-mailing these professors, I would strongly advice against it. Email’s are easily forgotten and ignored. Take the time (and money) to send personalized letters to them. An example of such an appeal letter would be (included in zip file):

Your Name
<<address>>

<<date>>

Associate Professor Chua
Division of Engineering Mechanics
School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Office: N3-xxx-xx
50 Nanyang Avenue
Singapore 639798

Dear Associate Professor Chua,

I am writing this letter to appeal the outcome of my application to the School of Mechanical Engineering. Although I understand that my grades, XXX/X for Mathematics, Economics, Physics and Chemistry respectively may not be up to par with the with the rest of the students, I believe that I have the aptitude necessary to become successful. Should my application be reconsidered, I will do my best to meet and exceed the expectations required by the students attending your college.

Attached is my personal statement which outlines my desire to study at the School of Mechanical Engineering as well as my other accomplishments and interests that I feel may be of value to your faculty.

Realizing the limitations of a written page, I would welcome the opportunity to participate in a personal interview to answer any of your questions and to better present myself and my qualifications and how they can be of benefit as a student of the School of Mechanical Engineering. Should you need to contact me, I can be reached at 9xxxxxxx.

I thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to a positive reply from you.

 Sincerely,

5. If your appeal has already been rejected, RE-APPEAL!

This is for those whose appeals have already been rejected. Although I’ve not personally tried this, I have heard of a few cases of people who have re-appealed (by emailing the admissions department directly) and gotten places in courses such as NTU’s Business Administration. Usually these people have more supporting documents in their re-appeal such as testimonials from their polytechnic or JC tutors, current employers etc.

Please feel free to use the attached sample appeals for your reference. More information regarding its use has been included in the read me file in the zip. Here’s to wishing you all the best in your appeal!

  1. Hi zueet. Your website is great. 🙂 Was wondering if it would be better to send in both the online appeal and the letter during this period?

  2. Hi my scotes for A level was h2- CCS h1- ABC but was rejected in all university would like to appeal u think i got any chance

    1. Hi Pamela,

To be honest, it’ll be quite hard for you to get a place due to your H2 grade. However, I’d recommend that you try anyway since you tend to lose nothing by appealing. 🙂

  3. I got rejected by NTU. My grades are CDD/A gp:D pw:B Chinese:D (C for Chem, D for math & econs A for geo) I want to enter NIE (science) but my grades are not good enough. I am planning to appeal to NTU but I do not know what to write for the 50 words text limit. Re-emphasing on my passion and aspiration for teaching most probably would not help. I did not get called down to interview for NTU/NIE. Even though my grades for A level Math is D, I still want to become a Math teacher. I have wondered if my grades was an indication/sign, telling me that math is not my “thing”. I believe I can still go to NIE to become a teacher after graduating with a degree because I would be more qualified? So, should I appeal into an engineering course? Since the first window of application has closed, I am unsure if I should appeal to engineering course. On a side note, do you know if I should appeal to NIE directly? I have check online and NIE said that application was through NTU. Perhaps if you are free you can drop me an email with your response? Thank you.

    1. Hi Charmaine!

I have a friend who become a teacher after getting her degree. They pay you your salary, send you for a 1 year course at NIE (you’re still paid) and sponsor your lodging as well. 🙂

school of mechanical and aerospace engineering or the admission office?

  5. Hi Zueet,

How do I appeal into NTU? Do they have time period for appealing? Cos i have been looking and searching for the proper procedure to appeal, but couldnt find on their website.

    Thanks.

  6. Hi Z, i just got rejected by NTU and SMU, (still awaiting NUS reply), and for SMU i have already done up an essay which again, i have been rejected by. For NTU i would be planning to write in to them via email. Is there a way you can help me out with the essay. Thanks! I didnt do very well for A levels. BDD/C GP: D PW: A MT: D

    1. Hi DT!

I’ll try my best but it might be awhile before I get back to you. 🙁 Just attach your appeal and send it to me. 🙂

  7. Hi,

I just got rejected by SMU and NTU. My rank points is 68.75. My grades are BCE/BBBA for bio, chem, math, econs, gp, pw and MTL respectively.
I’ve heard that NTU will consider you for their single degree programmes if you put down a double degree as a choice and do not get in.. However, my friend who has the same rank points as me got into Chem and biochem as she put it down in as a single degree while i put it down as a double degree. Did this contribute to my rejection?

Also, I applied to SMU with econs as my first choice and got rejected. Is it possible to apply to SIS so that i have a higher chance of getting in?

Thank you in advance for your help 🙂

    1. Hi Sadject,

I’m really sorry to hear that you failed to get in. 🙁 I’m not familiar with the double degree programme so I can’t say if it affected your chances.

And yes, there is no restriction to what you can appeal for. You can appeal for courses even if you never applied for it previously. However, if you’re called for an interview, they’re likely to ask you why you didn’t apply for that course the first time round.

      Hope this helps/ 🙂

      – Zueet

    1. Hi Vivian!

Your chances depends on how close your grades are to the IGP and cohort size (more places = more free places = higher chance of getting in). 🙂

      Hope this helps!

      – Zueet

  8. Hi,

I am an a level student and have grades of CEE/C BA for Bio/Chem/Maths/Econs(h1) and applied for ntu biosci, nie, maths, chem and chinese but i still haven receive a reply till today. I have been rejected by nus and smu. What do you think about the chances, as well as the chances for appeal? Should i consider retaking the a levels all over again?

    Thanks and bless you:)

    1. Hi Wendy,

To be honest, it might be hard for you to to get into the courses you mentioned as your grades are quite far off from the IGP.

Are there any courses in your IGP that you’re interested in?

    1. Hi W,

For the online appeal, I think you can attach one or two appeals. Shouldn’t be a problem. 🙂

      – Zueet

  9. hi zueet! I have just sent you an email. Could you please reply me back soon? i am really in need of your help right now 🙁 thanks

    1. Hi Jesz!

Please give me a bit more time! I’m trying to get back to everyone as fast as I can.

I apologize for the wait. 🙁

  10. Hi Z,

    My grades are
    H2 econs A
    H2 math C
    H2 geog D
    H1 chem C
    gp C
    pw B
    chinese A

May I know the chances of me getting into NUS FASS, NTU Sociology and SMU Econs?
I wasn’t even called up for interview for SMU. I am offered by NUS PFM and NTU Chinese. I am planning to appeal to all 3 schools, do I rely have to write the appeal letter out? Possible to type it out and print?
    Thanks!!

    1. Hi clyee!

Are you taking about personal appeals or the ones done though the NUS/NTU/SMU portals? For the offical appeals done through the NUS/NTU/SMU portals, you just type it and send it off online. For personal ones, you can type, print and snail mail it out. 🙂

      – Zueet

  11. Hi Zueet,

it’s my 2nd attempt to apply into NIE this year, and yes again they rejected me for the 2nd time in a row….

Gonna submit my final appeal letter through the NTU portal, but chances are it’s gonna be slim. I’ve went for the interviews for both years and somehow i just couldn’t get in…

Could you assist in me for my final try into NIE’s bachelor of education ?

Drop me an email if you can, F

    1. Hi Liverpool!

  12. Zueet, I would like to hear your opinion. I applied for NUS and faculty of science asked me for the discretionary interview, but I didn’t get in and overall I got rejected. Now I am thinking of appealing to faculty of science, but when I asked my high school college counselor, he said ‘If science was the one that gave you an interview – if you appeal to them then it is a waste of time, they will not entertain our appeal because they already interviewed you and did not think you were strong enough’.

What do you think of this..? Should I still appeal to faculty of science…?

    1. Hi HK!

While what your counselor said has some truth to it it may be worth your time to appeal for it anyway. 🙂

      – Zueet

  13. Hey!

  15. Hi Zueet,

i would like to heed some advice from you regarding how to write the 50 words appeal letter.

The course that i wish to appeal is business course in NTU.

    Please advise.

    1. Hi Rochelle!

I have a sample attached at the bottom of the post with what I submitted. If it helps, you can send me what you have written and I’ll try to help you vet it if I can. 🙂

      – Zueet

  16. hello, my first choice for NTU was business but i got the offer from econs. my grades are ABB/A WITH GP C PW B. i didnt get called for interview and right now i am trying to appeal to business course. may I know what do i have to include in my appeal form? like do i need supporting documents besides the 50words statement?

    1. Hi luexoxo,

For NTU, you need not need to include anything else with your appeal. 🙂

      All the best luexoxo! 🙂

  17. Hi Zueet,

My Alvl result was ACE/AAC and I applied to NUS FASS and NTU 1) Communication Studies 2) ADM.
I have yet to receive my posting and I am very worried now as many of my friends already received their posting.
Do you think I will stand a chance of getting into either NUS or NTU?

    Thanks!

    -Jieting

    1. Hi JT,

To be honest, it might be a little tough for you as your grades are quite far off from last years IGP. 🙁

Also, for ADM, you have to submit a portfolio. Did you remember to do that?

      – Zueet

  18. Hello,
Thanks for the guide. I have a question, if I was being offered a program, and my appeal application did not turn out well, can I re appeal even when I already started classes? Like jumping over

    1. Hi Keliiy!

You can’t reappeal per se but you can opt to transfer to another course depending on how well you do in your first semester, your reason for transfer, places available etc.

      Hope this helps. 🙂

      – Zueet

  19. Hi there, I am having a hard time deciding what path to take right now and was hoping you could help. I’ve always wanted to study biz admin in NBS, however, because I did not take Amath for ‘O’s, I had to go for an interview. I thought I did well but I got rejected by NBS and got offered to study Econs instead, my 4th choice. I am a poly student with a final GPA of 3.97 and Im hoping you could advise me on my appeal success chances.

    1. Hi Kreslain,

It’s really hard to say what your chances are. Especially with a course that is this popular. My advice as always is to just try anyway because you really don’t know until you do. Besides, you stand to lose nothing. 🙂

  20. Hello Zueet,
Can you send me that email please! Would like a rough idea of how to write the essay, thank you!

    1. Hi A!

Sorry for the late reply but I have no email on how to write personal statements. 🙁 You can read the one I used as well as check out the link with a few samples attached for more samples. 🙂

      Hope this helps A!

      – Zueet

  21. Hi Zueet!
thanks for the awesome blog as it has given me more insight!
I am still waiting for my uni offer from nus and ntu. i did okay for my subjects but bad for my gp.
my grades are BBC/A (chem, maths, phy, econs) S for GP and B for PW.
I applied real estate for nus and biz for ntu. besides that i applied engineering courses for the some of my choices
Do u think i can go anywhere with my GP grade? thank you so much! 🙂

    1. Hi Nat!

I’m really sorry for the late reply. 🙁 I’m guess that you would have gotten your replies by now (and I hope it’s positive!). Generally unless it’s listed as a specific requirement (or it’s a writing intensive course), your GP grade will not affect your chances too badly. In most cases, you’ll just have to come down for an interview and take and pass an extra English module after you start university.

However, your grades are quite far off from the minimum requirements to enter those courses. 🙁 I still wish you the very best though!

      Hope this helps. 🙂

      – Zueet

  22. Hi! Did you mail the professors via mail and how did you do that? Like how did you find their addresses etc?

I am planning to appeal to psych. So i shld do the normal online appeal + mail the deans/heads first and reappeal by letter to the psych dept if my appeal doesnt get thru?

    1. Hi V!

I found the names and addresses of the professors by looking through the staff and faculty list on the respective school websites. 🙂

I recommend doing both at the same time. Appeal through the normal method and at the same time, start sending out your personal appeal letters. It takes time for your letter to be mailed and sorted out so it’s wise not to leave it to the last minute.

      Hope this helps V!

All the best for your application!

      – Zueet

I am from vietnam and I took the university entrance exam.
I just got rejected to NUS and i am planning to appeal.

      1. Hi Zueet,

May i know your email? Is this it?: share [at] zueet.com
If you could, i would love to mail you my appeals for you to help me improve on…
Thank you so much for all your time and effort!

        1. Hi R!

I’m sure this reply will come to you a little late but yes, you can contact me there. I have a lot of emails to go through so I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to get back to you in time. I’ll certainly try my best though!

          – Zueet

      2. Dear Zueet.
Sorry to disturb you again, but i am confused and concerned about this. You encourage sending appeals to multiple deans within the school. Yet the uni webpages frequently warn applicants not to do so as it would slow down the process.

Would sending them have the opposite effect of annoying the school and deans and show our inability to follow instructions?

I desperately want to boost my chances but i am not sure it is a wise thing to do.. Please advise as soon as you can and thank you so much!

        1. Hi R,

While that has always been the case, it seems to have worked out well for those who have done so but whether you should do it or not should be your own decision. If it is something you’d like to try, then I’d be more then willing to help you with it. 🙂

          – Zueet

  25. Did NTU called you up for an interview after you appeal normally?
Did the professor called you up for an interview after u sent a personal letter to him?

      1. Hi Zueet
in desperate need of a little help here
i have recieved rejection letters from all three unis and wondering how to go about my appeal
        im interested in sociology.
        My grades are
        BCC HIST/ LIT/ECON GP:D PW:B H1 MATH:D AND CLB : PASS
do i stand a chance or should i go for something with a lower IGP
I was very involved in my school but i dont know how far that would take me seeing as i did not get a DA interview previously.

        1. Hi :(!

Your grades aren’t that far off from the IGP but if you wish to try for something safer, you might wish to consider NTU History.

          – Zueet

  26. Hi Zueet,
    My grades are as follow
    BCC/C
    PW:B
    GP:S

I cross referenced to the cut of point of last year cohort for SMU SIS. based on the indicative grade profiles solely on content subjects, i may have met the 10th percentile.
However, with calculation of rank points assuming GP and PW to be C, i am off by 3.75.

    Do i stand a chance?
Do you think its wise to retake GP( i have heard that SMU consider GP in different seatings)

    Looking forward to your reply

    Sincerely
    Sebas

    1. Hi Sebas,

Sorry for the late reply! Normally I’d recommend not applying for courses more then 2.5 points away from the IGP but I highly recommend you still try.

Yes, SMU (and I think only SMU) will consider candidates who have taken GP at a different sitting. If you’re in NS then it’s something you may wish to consider doing since you have 2 more years to apply. I hope you still applied this year though. 🙂

All the best for your application Sebas!

  27. Hi zueet, your website is really great. I read each and every advice made in this forum. I am an IB diploma candidate, I have my exams in 12 days that means the most stressful moment of my life. I have been shortlisted for SMU school of social science interview , and I am pretty sure it’s based on Discretionary criteria though university has not mentioned that yet. As for my grades, I know as a matter of fact that I can’t get a score more than 32 in my final IB with decent subjects. For my discretionary admission profile, I sent everything possible since I knew this is my only way out I can make to get admitted:
Since my main motive is to get in psychology and human development I have done my best in those fields. So the biggest screw up can be my final exams. So please state my chances since I have also applied to FASS NUS and NTU psychology but my main aim is SMU school of social science from which I have an interview secured.
And I request you to drop an email since I still have a lot to ask you about interviews, I know you don’t give much of advice to international applications but any word from you could be great help.
    Thank you in advance. 🙂

    1. Hi International Applicant!

I know this reply comes way past your interview but I’ve still dropped you and email. I’ll try my best to help you. 🙂

  28. Hello Zueet,
I’ve just received my alevel results and got as follows : PME/C : BBC/A GP: C PW: A MTL: D. I’ve yet to hear from NTU (Psychology)/NUS (Materials Science Engineering). Im getting a bit jittery right now cause all of my friends got their offer of acceptance already.

  29. hi! i got BCD for my 3 h2s, an E for my h1, and A for GP and A for PW. what are my chances of getting into smu social sciences? a few of my friends applying for accountancy and business in smu have gotten their interviews but i haven’t received any news.

  30. Hey Z,
My grades are H2: ABB H1:A GP:A PW:A I applied for smu law but was offered my second choice business, please drop me an email to advice on what I can possibly do.

    1. Hi Law reject,

I’, really sorry but I can’t help you much here. 🙁 Law is a really competitive. You can consider writing a written appeal but I’m not sure it’ll help much for such a competitive course. 🙁

  31. Hi Zueet,

I’m a poly student. The IGP for the NTU course I’m interested in has a 10th percentile of 3.38. If my poly GPA is 3.3, is my chances of getting into the course good? P.S. The course is a humans course and I was a humans student in poly.I’m worried because the cohort size of my course is small..

    Thanks:)

    1. Hi EC,

I’m sorry but I’m not well versed in poly applications. You might have more luck by posting at brightsparks or hardwarezone forums. 🙁 Hopefully someone else that sees this can help you though. 🙂

      All the best!

  32. Hey Zueet,

Would you, by any chance, know if the three universities keep a record of previous applications or letters of appraisal?

    1. Hi J,

I’m not sure but I wouldn’t recommend recycling anyones appraisal letter. You want yours to stand out and not appear as if it was copied and pasted from somewhere. 🙁

If you need help writing one please let me know. 🙂
